Theater
- Balcony is not ideal for programming because of problems with sound, screen sightlines (the railing is the chief concern, especially because many films are foreign with subtitles at bottom of screen), and programming separation (partially because of splitting the group into two, want everyone to have same experience)
- There was, however, support for a balcony-style theater outside the film committee representatives
- An adjacent, or at least close, “blackbox” theater (50-100 seat capacity) is an even larger priority because of the potential not only for smaller films (major attraction for student orgs) but also for comedy shows, spoken word, and lectures; this space could also double as a meeting room; film projector in shared projection room would be ideal
Entertainment Venue/Pub
- Complexities of booking on a limited budget makes a larger venue, assuming it can effectively accommodate ticketed shows, more appealing because it allows both scheduling larger bands and selling additional tickets, which makes ticket prices less expensive
- Space for 600 ticketed attendees (per fire marshal rules) should be minimum
- The best space would be flexible enough to open for non-ticketed events and then close for ticketed ones while still maintaining the availability of at least a portion of the rest of the pub and games room if it is also adjacent
- Want a room that’s clearly a music venue: do like High Noon Salon or Doty Dumpling’s Dowry => lots of wood is good, cheesy sports bar is not
- A “flow room” or lobby would be nice because people currently wrap all over the building in lines waiting to get in; a street entrance also could help with the problem
- Green room also nice
- Like that the balcony provides potential for flexibility, especially if it contains tiered effect
- Outdoor patio/beer garden would be great; rooftop?
- Nervousness about bowling being too close to music (pins falling could be distracting)
Craftshop
- Mixed emotion on whether to move or not
- Not feasible to operate two craftshops => synergy & creative energy of multiple crafts together is important
- PLEASE MAKE SURE at least some meeting rooms are “craft friendly” by including sinks & hard floors (something that lets you get messy)
- QUESTION: why is craftshop no longer on list => has thought been given to implications of leaving it at Memorial Union
- Make sure facility is program-oriented rather than a conference center => craftshop could be another anchor for student activity
Other Comments
- Badger Hall need to be available to students on a regular basis
- Please make sure there is a larger meeting room aside from Badger Hall to meet programming/space needs when Badger Hall is booked
