Broad Scope Program Model
Broad Scope Program
The Wisconsin Union, in partnership with the A/E teams Workshop Architects and Moody Nolan, are proud to present the latest broad scope program. The broad scope program defines what functions will be in the building and how much space will be dedicated to such operations. Below, you will find a pie chart, illustrating the square feet as a percentage of the whole building. Union Council, the governing board, approved the draft on March 25, 2008. The final program will be voted on by Union Council on May 6, 2008

Description
*More intricate details will be designed throughout the Summer and Fall of 2008.
Event & Meeting Space-35%
The new south campus union will expand meeting room spaces, improve the flexibility of such rooms for multi-purpose uses, and enhance the quality of the rooms in terms of character, functionality and technological capacities.
- The Auditorium and Film Theater will provide a venue that accommodates ~400 people, complementing the existing venues at Memorial Union-the Play Circle (168 seats) and the Union Theater (1300 seats).
- The Badger Hall will have a stage and provides a 1,000 person venue (seated) or near 2,000 person venue (standing). Currently, there is no such space on campus that can accommodate such large events including symposiums, speakers, conferences, and concerts of such magnitude. Badger Hall will be divisible to accommodate other needs of the campus when large events are not occurring.
- Additionally, large, meeting, small, and extra small meeting rooms will be scattered throughout the building, carefully balancing the demand for flexible, multi-use spaces with the unique needs of campus (such as dance floors, quiet space, and other interior needs).
Additional space included is for various support functions, green rooms, pantry and service corridors, and storage space for the aforementioned spaces.
Retail Dining (Food)-16%
The Wisconsin Union has heard the resounding cry for more variety and more quality food options at the current Union South. The new options include: a coffeehouse, a food court concept, and a pub.
- The coffeehouse will have a small stage, conducive to low key performances including poetry slams, acoustic music, acapella groups, and more.
- The “food court” that offers 3-4 different food options. This “food court” could look much like Lakefront on Langdon or be much more integrated throughout the building.
- The pub provides ample opportunities to integrate and ultimately enhance various elements of the project. This includes a potential partnership with the recreation and bowling center. Additionally, the pub will have a dedicated entertainment space, to replace the current Club 770.
Additional space included is for various support functions, green rooms, dishwashing, and storage space for the aforementioned spaces.
Arts & Entertainment-12%
- The Memorial Union, for many years, was the only art gallery in the city of Madison. As the Madison arts community grew, so too did the Wisconsin Union’s commitment. The Wisconsin Union owns over 1,300 pieces in its permanent collection-one of the largest in the state. An Art Gallery at the new south campus union is not only essential to the history and tradition of the Wisconsin Union, but also provides the same culture to the south end of campus. This space includes gallery space and art preservation and work space, along with storage for the permanent collection.
- A Reservable Kitchen meets many needs of campus ranging from student organizations to Mini courses to academic food science and culinary classes.
- Currently, Union South is home to the last arcade in downtown Madison. As the Wisconsin Union looks to be the 21st Century union, recreation is an important element. In the broad scope program model, there is space for bowling and table games ranging from air hockey to table tennis, from pool/billiards to shuffleboard. Additionally, there is room for electronic gaming centers and other recreation options. These elements may be in a dedicated space, or may also be integrated throughout the facility such as the pub.
Lounge -9%
- Lounge space at the new south campus union will serve various audiences ranging from high activity places that may double as seating for the restaurants/delis to quiet study lounges.
- Additionally, pocket lounges will be scattered throughout the building to provide more intimate, hidden, and comfy nooks and crannies. Part of the quiet study lounge will also serve as “pre-function” space. For example, it will be large enough to accommodate all Badger Hall occupants for a reception.
- The Design Committee recently approved the addition of a climbing wall to the plans. The climbing wall was first considered after it landed in the top five in a market research survey in the fall of 2005. The concept is still at its infancy but could include a Hoofers lounge.
Kitchen-9%
- After many meetings with Envision Strategies, an operational consulting firm, the Wisconsin Union has decided to move the central kitchen from Memorial Union to the new south campus union. This will improve wayfinding, adjacencies, and overall efficiency. This kitchen will be the primary production space for campus delis and satellite operations and the catering unit. Support space for the two restaurants, deli, and catering functions at Memorial Union will still be maintained.
- The broad scope program keeps the warehouse at this location. While it is proposed to be smaller than what Union South currently occupies, Envision recommends a smaller, more efficient operation for storage and supplies.
- Included in the ‘Kitchen’ are the offices for catering, deli, warehouse, and retail dining offices to the new facility.
Union Services and Administration-5%
- These services range from existing services at the current Union South such as information desks (Corner Store desk), WisCard office space and service window, and the passport and photo ID operation.
- Additional service features will be included such as a satellite Central Reservations office and student services flex space that would operate much like a service kiosk providing information and/or services ranging from the Registrar, Bursar, Dean of Students Office, University Health Services, and other campus services.
- Internal space for the Cash Office, Accounting, administration offices, and information systems workspace are also included in this allocated space.
Additional space included is for various support functions, green rooms, dishwashing, and storage space for the aforementioned spaces.
Support space-5%
- The Wisconsin Union has made a commitment to an employee breakroom, shower facilities, and lockers.
- Included in support space is the Loading Dock to service the warehouse, retail shipments, and equipment deliveries.
- Additional space is included for storage space throughout the building to support facilities and event management and provide storage for various units throughout the building.
Student Programs and Organizations-4%
- The new south campus union, much like Memorial Union, will have a Program office. This office will have space for student programming board offices (Wisconsin Union Directorate) and their respective advisors. Additionally, there will be a Lounge and Conference Room for the student organizations housed at the new south campus union. More details about student organizations, the space determination, and the interiors will be designed in the summer and fall of 2008.
- There are also spaces reserved for Student Organization Offices, as allocated by the Associated Students of Madison (ASM). This also includes space for two Union partners: the Greater Undergraduate Tutorial Service (GUTS) and Youngblood. Both of these Union partners have long history at the Wisconsin Union. GUTS was the first program of its kind across the nation and since its inception, has been housed at Union South. Additionally, Youngblood was the first campus blood donation center in the nation; it, too, has been housed at Union South.
Market/Convenience Store-3%
- A campus-wide survey, along with an operational model and business plan, will determine what sort of items this store might offer. At this point the conversation considers something as simple as a grab ‘n’ go stop to something as complex as a mini-market. This percentage includes support space and storage.
Retail-2%
- A campus-wide survey, along with an operational model and business plan, will determine what sort of items this retail options might desired. There will be two retail spaces, with the actual business inside yet to be determined. It could include a financial institution, an outfitter, a spirit shop, or other retail concepts. The Wisconsin Union is only at the preliminary designs.
*More intricate details will be designed throughout the Summer and Fall of 2008.
