2nd Round Comments

From Memorial Union’s Comment Board

  • Big group study area with chairs. Private study rooms/meeting rooms that students can rent out for group meetings & student orgs
  • Grocery store with low prices
  • Outdoor ice skating rink
  • Badger themed sports bar & grill. Another ballroom because they are always being used
  • Bowling and game room is always used now, so they should be in the new one too!!!!!
  • Environmentally sustainable! (Ditto)
  • Climbing wall would be great!
  • Do not make the sports bar and music venue in the same place
  • MORE MEETING SPACE! Food and retail can be provided by the private sector. Meeting space central. DANCE SPACE is also important, especially beyond 1 ballroom. This space can be used for dance student orgs and meetings. Also, I hate the grocery store.
  • You need to keep bowling and more large mtg. rooms for student orgs! Especially ones that are designed with a dance floor for dancing!
  • Keep the game room with pool!
  • Doesn’t seem like there’s enough restroom space?
  • Bike shop center
  • Make it so handicapped people can use it! The new union needs ramps and elevators
  • I think it’s awesome that the new building will have a pub and entertainment venue - I love the Rathskeller but it’s definitely not ideal for a larger show. The Esplanade design is nice because of the large open space it provides. I also like the Terrace because of the multiple levels it seems to provide
  • I like the Terrace plan best
  • We need more dance spaces (<= PLEASE) (<= YES, with wood floor)
  • Climbing wall, bike station => people need places to fix their bikes
  • Bike station & bike repair space. (<= YES)
  • Fountain or other water source!
  • More larger rooms for practice dancing and meeting
  • Please make it as environmentally friendly and efficient as possible - it would set an example for other universities and perhaps raise the bar a bit!
  • Wheelchair access throughout the building is either nonexistant or unpublicized. Why is this campus so impassable by wheelchair?
  • Climbing wall would be terrific
  • None of the designs offer enough parking, especially considering the size of the hotel area in the same models. If you want U. South to be used more that means better access which equals more parking
  • Please don’t raise seg fees for this
  • Why tear down a perfectly good building and waste more money? Adapt the current building
  • More spaces for student orgs. More rooms for ballroom dancing/dances in particular, helps out the student orgs. In the end, a room like the Great Hall in Memorial Union. Thanks.
  • Solar heating, solar daylighting, solar electric. These are good.
  • Since I don’t drink the only thing to do on this campus on Friday nights is to bowl. Please don’t take this away
  • More dance space please
  • I love Eli Lechter
  • Bike station and climbing wall please
  • No plastic plates and cuttlery in the restaurants! (I agree!)
  • Keep the bowling LANES!
  • The winter garden seems much more welcoming than Union South now. I like that idea
  • The scale of the proposed Union South drawing, looking north-east, doesn’t match that of Wendt Library. Those “imposing”-looking
  • Space for dancing! Specifically ballroom dance floor
  • What about the employee lounge?
  • Focus on utility of the space and incorporate modern aesthetics into the design
  • More dance space, perhaps some practice rooms with smoother floors
  • NOT THE TERRACE
  • Where does the metamorphosis take place? [???] What do the engineers really want?
  • Keep bowling, possible more lanes because they’re always full when I’m there
  • I’d like less campus elite. 101 (fist of power)
  • 1) There is nothing “green” in demolishing a very serviceable building after only 36 years of service (actually 2 such buildings.) This is another failure of principle and imagination. This coul/should be an excellent demonstration project of “adaptive reuse” which is much more in keeping with “sustainable design” & “green building” principles which are being touted as benefit points. THE UW & WUD should be setting a more ethical and enlightened example. 2) It is inappropriate to fund this through significantly increased student fees when the motive is to expropriate the student union to provide amenities to the future “Wisconsin Centers for Discovery”, which is only tenuously a student facility. Therefore, this should only be proposed if the “Center” provides the funding to make the students whole for their loss of use in perpetuity & to carry the full cost of the portion of the project that benefits the “Center” & supports its activities. In brief, the adults should pay in their own way!
  • Make a classical building where Helen C. White stands; move Library to Union South Site; expand the Terrace West!
  • A new south is cheaper than renovating the current Union South. The new building will also be sustainable (cost and energy efficient)
  • Oooh! Can I have a pony?  Seriously, why throw so much money into completely demolishing/rebuilding a perfectly usable space?  With the sustainability rhetoric sweeping its way through the campus advertising, it’d be at least honest to include plan options involving updates of the current infrastructure
  • I agree that rebuilding it seems like a waste.  It’s functional & fun the way it is.  I like the bowling lanes/game room, and i like Club 770.  the computer lab is too cramped/could be expanded.  the main change that needs to happen is BETTER FOOD OPTIONS.  Something un-greasy; some vegetarian and/or ethic options.
  • Stop [complaining] about how we don’t need it, Union South is sick.  [Other thoughts:] parking, post office, grocery store, student org/volunteer, UHS satellite, decent food court open early and late, Rath-type place that has small stage & open mic but not German theme, no stupid paraphernelia shops that sell UW stuff, a room with board games and video games for people who don’t drink
  • Keep bowling and pool tables!
  • Is it going to feel like Memorial Union? or not? should it?
  • Comfy places and eat, Better FOOD CHOICES!! I like Esplanade best, the Terrace design is really UGLY! (what the he[ck] is a winter garden?)
  • It should be modern, stylish, sexy, luxurious, and comfortable.  In other words, just have fun with the design!  Let’s make another Milwaukee Art Museum Design!!  On that note, it would be cool to have a better student art gallery.  Let’s add some creative furniture to spice things up!!  :-)
  • It would be great to have a better/bigger parking lot.  Please do keep the arcade and pool tables & bowling…that’s usually why I love going to the U. South.  A better cafeteria w/ a lot of windows like the Lakefront on Langdon would be great.  Better food is always a must…keep it healthy too.  It would be nice to have a theater there too.  Try to keep the building well lit by using more natural lighting.  Let’s be green w/ this new building.
  • We would like to see a fountain when you come in the main entrance.
  • SPORTS BAR/restaurant featuring badger memorabilia
  • Needs more trees and bigger theater/cinema spaces
  • CLIMBING WALL!! - Please
  • Keep space for the Marching Band on Football Saturdays!
  • Does demolishing one building to replace it with another slightly larger one really strike everyone as a cost-effective way of doing anything?
  • Recycle old union like was done with Ogg.  NO MORE WASTE!!
  • Keep bowling
  • Climbing Wall!!
  • Quiet rooms with big library table, live music, outside sitting (like the Terrace)
  • Bike shop
  • A quiet computer lab
  • Make sure to include plenty of benches and carpeting
  • Music venue first, sports bar second
  • Vegan food (yes)
  • Tear Wendt down and include it in the New Union
  • Rooms for dancing
  • Outdoor seating area (beer would be nice too similar to the mem union), keep the game area, open outdoor greenspace to play football, soccer, etc.
  • It should keep the bowling alley and arcade, as well as the computer lab
  • A place to fix my bike.  Thanks
  • Need more meeting space for student orgs
  • more large meeting rooms for meetings and practices
  • more dance space for the DANCERS on campus.  Just tons of dance space
  • Make sure it is “green”!  The “terrace” design is hideous - I think esplanade would be best for the aesthetics.  Natural light would be great - there’s not too much now.  More room for students & less for meetings/admin?
  • …and the sheltered & secured bicycle parking is…where?
  • I want “lulz” in the new union?
  • Parking
  • Disco room
  • Dave Chappelle
  • Climbing Wall
  • Movie theater! (w/ more than one screen)
  • Dance studio w/ mirrors
  • Movie theater!  We need one on campus
  • Yes!  Dance studios w/ mirrors!  We practice w/o mirrors & it’s difficult - member of hypnotiq
  • Dance studio with mirrors! (<= NO! Dumb)
  • Not as dark and scary
  • Make sure that there is a terrace large enough for the pre-game concerts!  Really big!
